A new show at conTEMPorary throughout
August brings together four wildly energetic artists.
Upstairs:
A fresh installation of Misaki
Kawai’s warm, humorous dolls—this
time, they romp around at garden picnics and are carried
into the sky by gently lolling balloons. Stitched
fabric and cardboard effigies of Kawai, the Beatles,
and Kenny himself totter and careen around the plush,
somatic dreamworld that Kawai invents, monitoring
the intricate gages of stitched felt aircraft or cruising
at the helm of a tin-foil convertible. Also a series
of Kawai’s equally playful drawings on display.
Downstairs:
Brendan Cass whips
up a whirlwind tour of Europe, but in Cass’
hands, docile postcard imagery undergoes a raucous
transformation. Riviera waters glitter next to skittle-toned
hotels, while blue-tipped basilicas leer like ripe
plums in the throes of Cass’ muscular dynamism.
Graham Gillmore’s
large, laquered, richly pigmented surfaces provide
the hyper-refined arena in which printed, carved words
and abstract, visceral shapes strategize together.
Schools of witty, playful words travel through the
subaquatic reeds of Gillmore’s wryly meandering
brushstroke. Gillmore looks forward to a solo show
at conTEMPorary this Fall.
Rory MacArthur’s
thick, layered, styrofoam constructions meld opposites:
dense, organic shapes are painted in space-age neons,
and hilariously bright paint is worked into polite
filigrees. The final product is impeccably polished
yet visually explosive, a brassy trumpet blare by
a technical maestro.
